Exactly what is says it is an unprocessed file created by a camera or scanner. (Digital Negative)

These files hold allot of image information and saves all the metadata and need to be developed into a final product.

PNG – Portable Network Graphics

These files are lossless. They can handle up to 16 Million colours. These can be great to keep your quality of your graphics intact on the Internet and you have the choice to save it into a transparency like a Logo for example.

What are thumbnails then?

They are reduced sized images of large images or videos. (Place holder for the original image)  These are often used for organizing or sending to clients for selection. These are also the requirement of some website and other platforms as they assist in helping the app load quicker making it more user friendly.
